National Particle Accelerator Open Day

Event Details

Progress needs science. Science, of course, encompasses an extraordinary diversity of disciplines, capabilities and facilities, each contributing to the drive for new knowledge and for new solutions to existing and emerging challenges. For over half a century, particle accelerators have been at the heart of that drive.

It is estimated that over 25,000 accelerators are currently in operation around the world. Some have even become household names, like the The Large Hadron Collider at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland, other accelerators are much more modest in scale like those used in radiotherapy. All, however, play a critical and distinctive role in the vital task of advancing and applying science worldwide.

The open day will have an exciting programme of events including talks and lab tours plus the opportunity to talk to UK universities, laboratories and industry to find out how you can find studentship and employment opportunities in this exciting field. Projects in this field span:

·        Accelerator physics – theory and experiments

·        Beam Dynamics

·        Materials and Vacuum science

·        Radio frequency, Microwave and Magnet Technology

·        Laser and Photonic technology

·        Electronic, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering

The tour will take place at Daresbury Laboratory which is one of the UK's accelerator laboratories. Daresbury Laboratory is home to ALICE (Accelerators and Lasers in Combined Experiments) that offers the prospects of new cancer treatments, and EMMA a novel compact accelerator.

If you are planning to take public transport, one way is to take a train to Warrington.  Then you could either share a taxi, or cross over the road to take bus 329.  Here are the bus times and route:

There are two train stations - Warrington Central and Warrington Bank Quay. Bus 329 passes by both stations.

The Open Day is being supported by the IoP Particle Accelerators and Beams (PAB) Group.
